Deleting your account
How to delete the account, from inside the app or without it. Worth knowing before you start: on this app, deleting the account does not delete your journal — that is on your phone, and it stays there.
- Two different things, and only one of them is your writing
- Your journal is on your phone, not on our servers — deleting your account does not touch it, and could not. Deleting your account removes the identity we hold: your email address, your user id and the record of whether you subscribe. To remove the writing, delete the app, which takes everything it holds with it. If you want both gone, do both.
- In the app, if you still have it
- Settings → Account → Delete account. It asks you to confirm, and takes effect immediately. If you signed in a while ago it may ask you to sign in again first — that is the identity provider refusing to delete on a stale session, not an error, and signing in again lets it through.
- By email, if you do not
- Write to privacy@spryng.io from the address you signed in with, asking for your Sensemaking Personal account to be deleted. If you used Sign in with Apple and chose to hide your email, that address is a relay ending in privaterelay.appleid.com and it is the only one we hold — send from it, or include it, which you can find under Sign in with Apple in your Apple ID settings. Without it we have no way to tell which account is yours, and we would rather ask than delete the wrong one.
- What is deleted, and when
- Your email address, your user id, the record of your subscription and the link between it and the store purchase. A request made in the app takes effect at once. A request by email is completed within 30 days of us confirming it is yours, and residual copies in routine backups age out within 90 days. We keep nothing else, and we may retain a record of the deletion request itself where the law requires it.
- What deleting your account does not do
- It does not cancel a subscription. Only Apple or Google can do that, from your store account, and one left running will keep charging you after the account it belonged to is gone — so cancel there first. It does not delete backups you made to your own Google Drive or iCloud; those are in your storage and yours to remove. And it does not delete anything on your phone.
