Frequently Asked Questions
Clear boundaries help prevent harm and false certainty.
How does Spryng relate to other sensemaking approaches?
Spryng is built on Active Sensemaking, a method drawn from ethnography and Brenda Dervin's Sense-Making Methodology. People share a short account of an experience and interpret it themselves on simple visual scales, so the meaning comes from them rather than from an analyst.
The method is set out step by step in Designing Sensemaking Studies: Research Methods for Understanding Communities (Reinhard and Reddy, Palgrave Macmillan, 2026).
Why not just collect open text in a form and summarize it with a general-purpose AI tool?
A summary reflects the choices of whoever writes the prompt, and it tends to smooth over the unusual accounts, dissent, and early warnings that matter most.
In Spryng, the person who lived the experience places their own story on visual scales, so the structure comes from participants rather than from an analyst or a model, and every cluster links back to the original stories.
Optional AI features sit alongside this and never replace participants' interpretation.
What security and compliance documentation do you provide?
Research Organization plans include HECVAT and DPA support, UK and EU review support, and custom data residency. We share assurance documents during an active procurement review. Your data remains yours, and we do not use it for any other purpose.
How do I present triads and ternary plots to a board or a funder used to Likert scores?
A single average on a 1-to-5 scale cannot tell a team where everyone is moderately content from a team where most are doing well and a few are in real difficulty.
Spryng's triads let people place a story among three competing pressures, such as speed, quality, and safety. Every point on the plot can be opened to read the story behind it, so you can show both the pattern and the human account.
Doesn't anonymous story collection invite venting and unhelpful noise?
To submit a story, participants interpret their own experience on triads, dyads, and context markers. That small amount of structured reflection tends to produce considered accounts rather than one-line complaints.
Spryng inquiry rooms are bounded and non-social: there are no public upvote buttons or comment threads.
Can our team purchase a multi-facilitator workspace or pay via invoice/PO?
Praxis includes 2 facilitator seats and scales up to 10. Extra seats are $39/seat/mo. Teams that need 11 or more seats, or organization-wide assurance, use Research Organization. Invoice and purchase order billing is available on Research Organization plans.
Reach out through the request-a-conversation form to set up invoicing, vendor setup, or custom participant volume.
What is Spryng.IO?
Spryng is a mixed-methods sensemaking platform designed for situations where meaning matters as much as measurement.
We help individuals and organizations surface lived experiences, explore patterns of interpretation, and learn responsibly in complex human systems, where traditional surveys and dashboards often fall short.
Is Spryng a self-serve survey or analytics tool?
No.
Stories do not collapse into a score, and participants interpret their own experience before anyone else does. Every plan is a container for collection and shared interpretation rather than generic survey tooling.
This distinction is intentional and central to how Spryng works.
How are the plans named?
By context — who is making sense together — never by size.
Intensity names like "focused", "program", or "governed" only mean something relative to each other, so they stop describing anything the moment the product moves. Contexts do not rot.
The core offerings are Sensemaking Studio (one complete loop, free for a year with the book), Personal Sensemaking (just you, on your phone), Inquiry (one story prompt across many people), Praxis (collaborative team sensemaking with shared Decision Rooms), and Research Organization (an institution that needs the assurance work carried for it).
What can I do without talking to anyone?
Sensemaking Studio, Personal, Inquiry, and Praxis are all priced publicly and start without a conversation.
Research Organization is quoted rather than listed, because procurement — assurance, residency, a DPA — is what defines it, not a bigger feature list.
Instrument design, custom analysis, and bespoke training are scoped work rather than a checkout, so those begin with a conversation whichever plan you are on.
What is a Sensor?
A Sensor is one focused inquiry: a prompt, participant interpretation, a dashboard, a Story Pack, and a reportable evidence set.
It is the core unit the plans are counted in. Inquiry includes one active sensor; Praxis carries collaborative sensor capacity across interactive rooms and story decks.
Adding another sensor is a capacity add-on, not a plan upgrade.
How do I get more capacity without moving up a plan?
A new capability becomes a pack. More of the same thing becomes a bundle. Neither one moves you up a plan.
Additional sensors and instruments, extra facilitator or admin seats, and response or participant bundles all attach to the plan you are already on.
You move up a plan only when the context changes — when a bounded group becomes an ongoing practice, for example.
How do I get Sensemaking Studio free?
Sensemaking Studio is free for one year for readers of Designing Sensemaking Studies: Research Methods for Understanding Communities (Reinhard and Reddy, Palgrave Macmillan, 2026). Buy the ebook or the print (softcover) edition, then send us your order confirmation as proof of purchase. Either edition counts. Library readers can email support@spryng.io, name the library, and request 90 days instead. A person on our team reviews each request. Send a receipt on the Activate Studio page, or email support@spryng.io.
What happens when the Studio year lapses?
After Studio lapses, you have a 30-day read-only export window. Your work can leave with you during that window.
Studio runs at book caps for one year, so continuing onto Praxis ($129/mo billed annually, $1,548/yr, or $149 monthly) is a cap change rather than a migration. Nothing is rebuilt and nothing is lost.
Studio is adapt-not-author: you adjust one bounded instrument yourself, within its bounds, as often as you need.
Can I have the instrument designed for me?
Yes. The instrument design service is $3,960. We design it with you: context, story prompt, signifier design, and piloting.
A Custom Interpretive Lens Set is the analysis equivalent: three custom visualisations for one sensor, injected into one Story Pack, with two rounds of refinement.
Both are scoped work, so they begin with a conversation rather than a checkout.
When is Research Organization the right plan?
Choose it when the work sits inside a government entity, research consortium, NGO, or a for-profit organization with an IT or security review process.
It is the right plan when vendor review, security controls, MFA, SSO, traceability needs, formal approvals, SLA expectations, or multi-team governance are part of the decision from the beginning.
Research Organization: From $29,087.40/yr, Spryng Care included. Quoted per organisation. Academic and nonprofit: from $23,987.40/yr (50% off the licence; Spryng Care isn't discounted). Invoice and PO; multi-year terms available.
Is there an academic or nonprofit rate?
Accredited academic institutions and registered nonprofits: 50% off licence fees. Academic Praxis is $774/yr. Services, including Spryng Care, pilots, and Instrument Design, are not discounted. One discount per order. Eligibility is confirmed before purchase. Government bodies are not eligible.
Why doesn’t Spryng tell me exactly which plan to buy?
Because in complex human systems, overspecific recommendations can create false certainty.
Spryng is designed to surface trade-offs, reveal weak signals, and support responsible judgment.
The orientation asks about your situation and lands you on the plan that fits it, but the choice stays yours.
Does Spryng use AI?
Spryng's AI-assisted features are transcription, translation and redaction of responses, and the optional AI Pattern Synthesis add-on. Each is optional. An account owner can ask us to turn any of them off for their organization by emailing privacy@spryng.io, and we confirm in writing when it is done. Turning off AI redaction does not turn off rule-based redaction.
Can partners deliver Spryng work?
Yes.
Experienced practitioners can co-deliver or lead Spryng work when the fit is right and the standards are clear.
Practitioner standards exist to protect participant care, interpretation quality, and accountable delivery. Some collaborations also move through supported practice before a practitioner leads work on their own.
Can I sign up with Gmail or another free email address?
New accounts need a work or organization email. A university, school or nonprofit address is fine. Free addresses like Gmail or Yahoo can't start a new account.
Sensemaking Studio is the exception: activate it with your book and any address. If someone invites you to their workspace, any address works there too.
Don't have a work email? Talk with us at support@spryng.io.
What is Prompter?
Pick a collector. Prompt stories. See the pattern.
Prompter is a free account. Add collectors from the Plaza; together they accept 100 stories a month.
The unmetered stories add-on is $19.63/month. Media storage is subject to fair use.
Finished collector designs are listed in the Plaza when they are published.
What is Spryng Care?
Spryng Care is onboarding, helpdesk, quarterly training, and ongoing optimization, with guidance on data-protection setup where needed. It is included with Research Organization. It is mandatory on that plan. It is not sold separately and has no separate price.
The Admin Platform, our internal governance and control plane, is not sold as a product.
Is Spryng right for every situation?
No, and that’s a strength.
Spryng is best used when the situation is complex (not just complicated), multiple perspectives matter, early signals are important, and decisions carry human consequences.
If speed or certainty matters more than care, Spryng may not be the right tool.
Where should I start?
Start from the context you are actually in.
Learning the approach, with the book in hand: Studio.
Your own reflective practice: Personal, which is free. The instrument-editing add-on is $49/yr.
Free collectors from the Plaza, 100 stories a month: Prompter. The unmetered stories add-on is $19.63/month.
One story prompt across many people, each interpreting their own: Inquiry.
Collaborative team sensemaking across interactive rooms and shared story decks: Praxis.
An institution that needs the assurance work carried for it: Research Organization.
If you are unsure, run the orientation — it asks about your situation and lands you on the plan that fits.
Can I pause a monthly plan?
Monthly Inquiry and Praxis can pause for up to 3 months in any 12. Your workspace stays read-only, with export. Annual plans cannot pause.
What is Spryng Field Study?
Spryng Field Study gives your team Praxis for 6 seats for 12 months, with design and facilitation support to complete one sensemaking study ($13,545.40 for 12 months; academic and nonprofit $11,241.40).
It includes Instrument Design for one instrument, Calibration & Review, kickoff and online collection support, one facilitated sense-making session, one findings readout, AI Pattern Synthesis for the year, and onboarding tied to Designing Sensemaking Studies.
Teaching with the book?
Instructors use Praxis at the academic rate. Each student gets Studio free for a year with their own copy of the book.
